The phase out begins with the 100 watt bulb in 2012. Until now compact fluorescents have been our only alternative. They do save energy but by comparison to LEDs they are energy guzzlers and what's worse they contain dangerous levels of highly toxic mercury which make them anything but 'green'. LED's are the energy saving, environmentally friendly future of lighting.
